5 Beautiful Colorado Fall Color Drives from Woodmoor & Monument

One of the best things about living in Colorado is watching the mountains turn gold each fall. From short scenic byways to full-day mountain adventures, there are plenty of beautiful routes within reach of Woodmoor and Monument.
Fall color timing is never exact. September is generally the best month for Colorado’s high-country aspens, but peak color may last only about a week in one location and can vary based on elevation, weather, and overnight temperatures. A good strategy is to choose your travel dates and then check where the color looks best as your trip approaches.
Here are five Colorado fall color drives worth adding to your seasonal list.
1. Guanella Pass Scenic Byway
Best for: A classic paved mountain drive with historic-town charm
Guanella Pass connects Georgetown and Grant along a 22-mile paved scenic byway. The route climbs through pine and aspen forests before reaching open alpine scenery near the top of the pass. In fall, the lower portions of the route are especially beautiful as the aspens turn bright shades of yellow and gold.
Consider beginning in historic Georgetown, enjoying the drive over the pass, and returning through U.S. Highway 285. You can also travel the route in the opposite direction, beginning near Grant.
Planning tip: Guanella Pass becomes extremely popular during peak-color weekends. Leave early, consider traveling on a weekday, and use designated parking areas rather than stopping along the roadway.
2. Peak to Peak Scenic Byway
Best for: Mountain views, historic communities, and a longer scenic day
The Peak to Peak Scenic Byway travels 55 miles from the Black Hawk and Central City area toward Estes Park. The byway follows the lower ridges of the Front Range, with views of the Continental Divide, historic mining communities, forested hillsides, and brilliant fall foliage.
Colorado’s official scenic-byway guide recommends allowing approximately two hours for the byway itself, without including the drive to the route or time spent stopping along the way.
This is a good choice when you want the drive to feel like a complete day out rather than a quick loop.
Planning tip: Build in extra time for overlooks, small-town stops, lunch, traffic, and photography.
3. Cottonwood Pass
Best for: Wide mountain scenery and a Buena Vista day trip
Cottonwood Pass begins west of Buena Vista and travels into the high country between the Collegiate Peaks and the Gunnison area.
The drive offers a mix of aspen-covered hillsides, mountain valleys, alpine views, and towering peaks. Colorado’s official tourism guide specifically recommends Cottonwood Pass as a fall detour from the Collegiate Peaks Scenic Byway.
This route works well as part of a full day that includes time in Buena Vista, a picnic, or a stop at one of the area’s local restaurants.
Planning tip: Conditions can change quickly at higher elevations. Check road and weather conditions before leaving, even when the forecast in Monument looks clear.
4. Trail Ridge Road
Best for: Dramatic alpine scenery and a Rocky Mountain National Park experience
Trail Ridge Road crosses Rocky Mountain National Park between Estes Park and Grand Lake. The paved road stretches approximately 48 miles one way and reaches an elevation of 12,183 feet, providing views of the Continental Divide, alpine tundra, valleys, lakes, and surrounding peaks.
The fall color is generally found at the lower elevations, while the higher portions of the drive offer expansive alpine scenery.
Rocky Mountain National Park uses a timed-entry reservation system during designated dates and hours. Trail Ridge Road can also experience temporary weather-related closures, even during its normal operating season. Check the National Park Service’s current reservation requirements and road status before traveling.
Planning tip: This is the route that requires the most advance planning. Confirm your park entrance arrangements, timed-entry requirements, weather, and road conditions before beginning the drive.
5. Kebler Pass
Best for: A fall weekend, photography, and extensive aspen groves
Kebler Pass, near Crested Butte, is farther from Woodmoor and Monument, but it is one of Colorado’s most memorable fall destinations.
The route travels along an improved dirt or unpaved road through extensive aspen forests. The Kebler Pass area is known for having one of North America’s largest aspen groves, making it especially popular with photographers and fall-color visitors.
Because of the distance, Kebler Pass is best treated as an overnight trip or weekend getaway rather than a casual afternoon drive.
Planning tip: The road surface and conditions can vary. Check the weather and current road information before committing to the route, particularly after rain, snow, or freezing temperatures.
